Home Island

Located across the lagoon and just a short ferry ride away, this unique part of the Cocos Keeling Islands is a must-see for visitors. Home of the Cocos Malay people, the island offers a complete contrast to West Island.

Wander the streets to see the kampong (town) or take a guided cultural tour or fishing and snorkelling tour, join the kids from the local school and help them practice their english while learing about their day to day lives, sample the wonderful, spicy Malay cuisine at the local restaurant or take a picnic lunch and sit under the canopy of one of the huge Calophyllum trees gracing the foreshore.

The Home Island Museum is open Monday to Friday during Shire office hours, see the staff for a key. The museum houses information and displays on local culture and traditions, Australian naval history, native flora and fauna, and the history of the early owners of the islands, the Clunies-Ross family.

The majestic Oceania House, located on the southwest corner of Home Island, was once the residence of the Clunies-Ross family but is now privately owned. Stroll the beautiful tropical gardens and grounds of this unique piece of history but please respect the privacy of the owners.

While you're on the island, check out the small shopping precinct where you can pick up groceries, Asian food goods, fishing gear, hardware and souvenirs, visit the picturesque cemetery located towards the north of the island, or picnic at the many pleasant shaded pondoks (shelters) along the shores and beaches of the island.
