West Island

West Island is an ideal size to explore by pushbike or, for the less energetic, by hire vehicle. There's plenty to do: explore Bob's Folly with its majestic stand of Calophyllum trees and native hibiscus, or take a plunge into the turquoise Indian Ocean at Trannies Beach, one of the island's most popular swimming beaches.

When the tide is low, treat yourself to a fascinating reef walk from Scout Park to Pulu Maraya, a tiny uninhabited island at the southern end of the atoll, where you'll find some excellent snorkelling.

Pack some refreshments and head to the Yacht Club for sunset drinks or just laze around in the crystal clear water at high tide. During the Trade Wind season from July to October, the Yacht Club has vantage points to watch kitesurfers and windsurfers as they carve up the lagoon.

Surfers can try out The Spot and The Shack, but always check with the locals on conditions first.

For a cultural break, see what resident artist Emma has created at the Big Barge Art Centre, then try a real coffee and delicious meal at Dory's Cafe. You can move on to The Club later, and chat with the locals over a cool drink.

If you're after some relaxing fishing, catch fish for dinner from the jetty and take advantage of nearby North Point's sandy beach to view the lagoon and Indian Ocean scenery. Take a dip at high tide, enjoy secluded sunset drinks ... or why not pick that spot to get married?
